Status updates:

The 1978 Kawasaki KZ1000D1 restoration project is moving along quite well.  We experienced a snag when we tried to start the engine for the first time, but we were able to work through it. When John hit the starter button, the engine roared to life.  Seconds later we heard a noise from the cylinder head.  It was the head gasket leaking… Most of the parts for this project have been supplied by the bike owner as he was going to attempt the restoration himself.    One word of advice, when doing an engine rebuild, try not to skimp on the gaskets.   Now we are waiting on the body parts from the paint shop.  The painted body work was received and the final touches were finished up.  The bike looks great and out customer was super happy!  We are too!  Check out the photos on the Naperville Motorsports FaceBook page.

1983 Honda CB1000C project. This bike started out as just a simple carburetor rebuild service and tires, however after we received the bike from the customer, we noticed a few more issues that needed attention.  This bike is one of those with a real cult following.  In good condition, this is a great bike to own and ride, however this one needed repairs to make it safe to ride.  We found the clutch slipping during the first test ride and after pulling the basket to inspect the bearing, we found the shaft ball bearing race missing and the bearing slapping around lose.  The next step is to pull the engine, split the cases and replace the bearing.  The bearing was replaced and the engine was re-assembled.  She purrs like a kitten now.  Another happy customer!  Check out our reviews on Google!

Triumph TR5T trophy: This barn find was stored for almost 20 years in a very poor environment.  The progress is staggering as it comes together.  We received the chrome parts back from the chrome shop and they look fantastic.  John put the chrome body parts on and did some wiring repairs.  Next is locating replacement side cover mounting hardware, as it is missing from the bike.  We located a side cover mounting bracket from our parts source and it’s a factory NOS bracket.  This mounted right up and the side covers look like they will line up perfectly.  The dzus fasteners that the customer provided are too short and will not allow the covers to lock on… so, back to the supplier for the correct parts.  There have been many customer supplied parts that are incorrect for this bike, it seems there will be quite a lot of wasted money on this project due to incorrect parts.  This customer wanted to restore the bike himself many years ago, he purchased many parts at that time and the parts are no longer returnable.  He will have a big box of new parts that will not fit this project.  I guess in short, I’m saying the most economical way to restore a bike is do it all at once, then you’ll be able to save a few dollars by returning wrong parts.  The bike has moved along in the restoration and it is almost complete.  Come in to check out it’s progress…

1974 Suzuki TS400L Apache:We received a gift from one of the friends of Naperville Motorsports; a Suzuki TS400 with a frozen piston.  The bike was complete, so I decided to get it running.  This would make a fun ride if it had the right parts to step up the power… That’s right, step up the power from a 400cc 2 stroke!

The first thing anyone needs to do when rebuilding a vintage engine, is to be sure parts are still available through the standard parts channels.  If parts are discontinued, the secondary channels will need to be used.  Secondary parts channels are far more expensive than you might think, so we try to stay away from them.  My thoughts are, because everything has a value, we need to try to stay reasonable with the search for parts.  This way it will be an affordable restoration.  Locating parts has been a challenge, but we were able to get everything needed to finish the engine.  The first start of the engine went off as planned.  After a quick ignition timing change, it runs and starts very easily.
